MATLAB, developed by The MathWorks, Inc., integrates computation, visualization, and programming in a flexible, open environment. It offers engineers and scientists an intuitive language for expressing problems and their solutions mathematically and graphically. Complex numeric and symbolic problems can be solved in a fraction of the time required with a programming language such as C, Fortran, or Java.
The new edition of this book covers MATLAB 6.1. Lots of changes have been made since the 5th edition of the book:
a description of how to use MATLAB's graphic user interface.
more emphasis on matrix computations, without using for-loops. For-loops and other control structures now appear after submatrices, colon notation, and matrix functions. A new section on the "find" function has been added.
the examples in the book are all linked together.
a new chapter on calling a C routine from MATLAB.
additional material on sparse matrix ordering and visualization.
This low-cost pocket book is ideal for getting up and running with MATLAB. It's also well-suited as a second textbook in courses that make use of MATLAB.

MATLAB Simulations for Radar Systems Design - Bassem R. Mahafza & Atef Z. Elsherbeni

    Product Description
Simulation is integral to the successful design of modern radar systems, and there is arguably no better software for this purpose than MATLAB. But software and the ability to use it does not guarantee success. One must also:ÖUnderstand radar operations and design philosophyÖKnow how to select the radar parameters to meet the design requirementsÖBe able to perform detailed trade-off analysis in the context of radar sizing, modes of operation, frequency selection, waveforms, and signal processingÖDevelop loss and error budgets associated with the design MATLAB Simulations for Radar Systems Design teaches all of this and provides the M-files and hands-on simulation experience needed to design and analyze radar systems. Part I forms a comprehensive description of radar systems, their analysis, and the design process. The authors' unique approach involves a design case study introduced in Chapter 1 and followed throughout the text. As the treatment progresses, the complexity increases and the case study requirements are adjusted accordingly. Part II presents a series of chapters-some authored by other experts in the field-on specialized radar topics important to a full understanding of radar systems design and analysis. A comprehensive set of MATLAB programs and functions support both parts of the book and are available for download from the CRC Press Web site.

Numerical Methods in Finance & Economics A MATLAB based Introduction - Paolo Brandimarte

This book presents a state-of-the-art introduction to the powerful mathematical and statistical tools used in the field of finance. The use of mathematical models and numerical techniques is a practice employed by a growing number of applied mathematicians working on applications in finance. Reflecting this development, "Numerical Methods in Finance and Economics: A MATLAB-Based Introduction, Second Edition" bridges the gap between financial theory and computational practice while showing readers how to utilize MATLAB - the powerful numerical computing environment - for financial applications. The author provides an essential foundation in finance and numerical analysis in addition to background material for students from both engineering and economics perspectives. A wide range of topics is covered, including standard numerical analysis methods, Monte Carlo methods to simulate systems affected by significant uncertainty, and optimization methods to find an optimal set of decisions.Among this book's most outstanding features is the integration of MATLAB, which helps students and practitioners solve relevant problems in finance, such as portfolio management and derivatives pricing.
This tutorial is useful in connecting theory with practice in the application of classical numerical methods and advanced methods, while illustrating underlying algorithmic concepts in concrete terms.Newly featured in the Second Edition include: in-depth treatment of Monte Carlo methods with due attention paid to variance reduction strategies; new appendix on AMPL in order to better illustrate the optimization models in Chapters 11 and 12; new chapter on binomial and trinomial lattices; additional treatment of partial differential equations with two space dimensions; expanded treatment within the chapter on financial theory to provide a more thorough background for engineers not familiar with finance; and, new coverage of advanced optimization methods and applications later in the text."Numerical Methods in Finance and Economics: A MATLAB-Based Introduction, Second Edition" presents basic treatments and more specialized literature, and it also uses algebraic languages, such as AMPL, to connect the pencil-and-paper statement of an optimization model with its solution by a software library.
Offering computational practice in both financial engineering and economics fields, this book equips practitioners with the necessary techniques to measure and manage risk.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

This book provides a fundamental introduction to numerical analysis. This book covers numerous topics including Interpolation and Polynomial Approximation, Curve Fitting, Numerical Differentiation, Numerical Integration, and Numerical Optimization. For engineering and computer science fields.

    From the Inside Flap
This book provides a fundamental introduction to numerical analysis suitable for undergraduate students in mathematics, computer science, physical sciences, and engineering. It is assumed that the reader is familiar with calculus and has taken a structured programming course. The text has enough material fitted modularly for either a single-term course or a year sequence. In short, the book contains enough material so that instructors will be able to select topics appropriate to their needs.
Students of various backgrounds should find numerical methods quite interesting and useful, and this is kept in mind throughout the book. Thus, there is a wide variety of examples and problems that help to sharpen one's skill in both the theory and practice of numerical analysis. Computer calculations are presented in the form of tables and graphs whenever possible so that the resulting numerical approximations are easier to visualize and interpret. MATLAB programs are the vehicle for presenting the underlying numerical algorithms.
Emphasis is placed on understanding why numerical methods work and their limitations. This is challenging and involves a balance between theory, error analysis, and readability. An error analysis for each method is presented in a fashion that is appropriate for the method at hand, yet does not turn off the reader. A mathematical derivation for each method is given that uses elementary results and builds the student's understanding of calculus. Computer assignments using MATLAB give students an opportunity to practice their skills at scientific programming.
Shorter numerical exercises can be carried out with a pocket calculator/computer, and the longer ones can be done using MATLAB subroutinie libraries. It is left for the instructor to guide the students regarding the pedagogical use of numerical computations. Each instructor can make assignments that are appropriate to the available computing resources. Experimentation with the MATLAB subroutine libraries is encouraged. These materials can be used to assist students in the completion of the numerical analysis component of computer laboratory exercises.
In this edition a section on Bezier curves has been added to the end of the chapter on curve fitting. Additionally, the chapter on numerical optimization has been expanded to include an introduction to both direct and derivative based methods for optimizing functions of one or more variables. An instructor's solution manual for the exercise sets is available from the publisher.
Previously, we took the attitude that any software program that students mastered would work fine. However, many students entering this course have yet to master a programming language (computer science students excepted). MATLAB has become the tool of nearly all engineers and applied mathematicians, and its newest versions have improved the programming aspects. So we think that students will have an easier and more productive time in this MATLAB version of our text.

Numerical Techniques for Chemical & Biological Engineers Using MATLAB - Elnashaie & Uhlig

All reactive chemical and biological processes are highly nonlinear allowing for multiple steady states. This book addresses the bifurcation characteristics of chemical and biological processes as the general case and treats systems with a unique steady state as special cases. It uses a system approach which is the most efficient for knowledge organization and transfer. The book develops mathematical models for many commercial processes utilizing the mass-, momentum-, and heat-balance equations coupled to the rates of the processes that take place within the boundaries of the system. The models are solved numerically through MATLAB codes with emphasis on the design and optimization of the chemical and biological industrial equipment and plants, such as single and batteries of CSTRs, porous and nonporous catalyst pellets and their effectiveness factors, tubular catalytic and noncatalytic reactors, fluidized bed catalytic reactors, coupled fluidized beds such as reactor-regenerator systems (industrial fluid catalytic cracking units), fluidized bed reformers for producing hydrogen or syngas, fermenters for fuel ethanol, simulation of the brain acetylcholine neurocycle, anaerobic digesters, co- and counter current absorption columns, and many more. The book also includes verification against industrial data. The book's CD contains nearly 100 MATLAB programs which are meant to teach the readers how to solve a variety of important chemical and biological engineering problems. The algorithms include solving transcendental and algebraic equations, with and without bifurcation; as well as initial and boundary value ordinary differential equations. Said Elnashaie is Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of British Columbia. Frank Uhlig is Professor of Mathematics at Auburn University. Chadia Affane is a PH.D. candidate in Applied Mathematics at Auburn with a B.S.in Chemical Engineering. The active interaction of these authors has brought about this new and modern interdisciplinary book.

John Barrow revisits one of the hottest topics in all of science, illuminating the modern quest to unlock the secrets of the universe.
Published in 1991, John Barrow's Theories of Everything was hailed as "a mind-boggling intellectual adventure" by Publishers Weekly and as "an exhilarating journey...important, engaging, and highly literate" by New Scientist . Now, in New Theories of Everything , Barrow completely updates his classic account of one of the hottest fields in all of science--the search for a cosmic key that will unlock the secrets of the Universe. Will we ever discover a single scientific theory of everything? How can one theory ever explain a world full of chaos and complexity?
In this stimulating volume, Barrow sheds light on these questions as he presents the reader with the very latest ideas and predictions, ranging from the speculations of Stephen Wolfram about the world as a computer program to recent developments in string theory and M theory, new varieties of complexity, new ideas about the nature of mathematics, and much more. He reveals that the field has changed dramatically. Fifteen years ago, scientists sought a single theory uniquely specifying the constants and forces of nature, but today they envision a vast landscape of different logically possible laws and constants in many dimensions, of which our own world is but a tiny facet of a higher dimensional reality. Equally important, Barrow reflects on the philosophical and cultural consequences of those remarkable new ideas, highlighting their implications for our own place in the universe.
The Theory of Everything has in recent years become the focus of some of the most exciting and imaginative thinking in science. Now fully revised, New Theories of Everything brings the story of this exhilarating quest completely up to date.
    Kirkus Reviews
Can any one theory account for everything in the universe? Barrow (Mathematics/Cambridge; The Infinite Book, 2005, etc.) gets right down to fundamental issues in addressing this central question in modern science. He breaks his subject into eight key areas: laws of Nature, initial conditions, forces and particles, constants, broken symmetries, organizing principles, selection biases and categories of thought. Each of these is given a rigorous examination. For example, in discussing laws of nature, Barrow attempts to look at all possible ways the universe, scientific laws and God might interact, including the possibility that any or all of the three don't exist at all. One key question is whether our math is adequate to describe the deepest level of reality, especially in view of Kurt Godel's incompleteness theorem, which holds that every mathematical system entails theorems that cannot be proved. The author suggests that Godel's insight, while true of abstract math, doesn't hold for applied math of the sort used in the sciences. The question of whether or not time and space themselves predate the universe gets a careful look, though not a definitive answer. That, of course, is the problem: There are no definitive answers as yet, only more or less promising approaches to the questions. Among the difficulties is the fact that the universe we can observe is only a fraction of what is believed to exist, and we can't be certain that the observable portion is typical. (Of course, to play the game at all, we need to assume so.) At the end, Barrow concedes that no theory can really account for everything; opinions, emotions and so forth are undeniably realm yet beyond all computation. Yet thisphilosophic recognition is not a denial of the scientific enterprise, but a recognition that the universe, at bottom, is subtler than our tools for analyzing it. A fascinating journey.

    ------------------------------------------------------

this book you'll learn how to:
Create dynamic websites with design and usability in mind, as well as functionality
Understand how PHP scripts work, giving you confidence to adapt them to your own needs
Bring online forms to life, check required fields, and ensure user input is safe to process
Upload files and automatically create thumbnails from larger images
Manage website content with a searchable database
You want to make your websites more dynamic by adding a feedback form, creating a private area where members can upload images that are automatically resized, or perhaps storing all your content in a database. The problem is, you're not a programmer and the thought of writing code sends a chill up your spine. Or maybe you've dabbled a bit in PHP and MySQL, but you can't get past baby steps. If this describes you, then you've just found the right book.
PHP and the MySQL database are deservedly the most popular combination for creating dynamic websites. They're free, easy to use, and provided by many web hosting companies in their standard packages. Unfortunately, most PHP books either expect you to be an expert already or force you to go through endless exercises of little practical value. In contrast, this book gives you real value right away through a series of practical examples that you can incorporate directly into your sites, optimizing performance and adding functionality such as file uploading, email feedback forms, image galleries, content management systems, and much more. Each solution is created with not only functionality in mind, but also visual design.
But this book doesn't just provide a collection of ready-made scripts: each PHP Solution builds on what's gone before, teaching you the basics of PHP and database design quickly and painlessly. By the end of the book, you'll have the confidence to start writing your own scripts or—if you prefer to leave that task to others—to adapt existing scripts to your own requirements.
Right from the start, you're shown how easy it is to protect your sites by adopting secure coding practices. The book has been written with an eye on forward and backward compatibility—recommending the latest PHP 5 techniques, but providing alternative solutions for servers still running PHP 4.3. All database examples demonstrate how to use the original MySQL extension, MySQL Improved, or the PHP Data Objects (PDO) introduced in PHP 5.1, letting you choose the most suitable option for your setup.
    Summary of Contents:
Chapter 1: What Is PHP—And Why Should I Care?
Chapter 2: Getting Ready to Work with PHP
Chapter 3: How to Write PHP Scripts
Chapter 4: Lightening Your Workload with Includes
Chapter 5: Bringing Forms to Life
    Chapter 6: Uploading Files
Chapter 7: Using PHP to Manage Files

A Guide to MATLAB for Beginners and Experienced Users - Hunt Lipsman & Rosenberg

    Review
'As a professional trying to learn MatLab by self study I found A Guide to MATLAB the best of the four books I have tried. Three things I liked that I have not always found in other books. The progression is slow but not trivial, with short examples to test your understanding. Symbolic computation is introduced early, and not relegated to the last chapter. Comprehension is tested at stages by three exams for which the solutions are completely worked out.' George Dieter, Professor Emeritus
' ... can be recommended to students and practitioners alike.' Zentralblatt für Mathematik und ihre Grenzgebiete Mathematics Abstracts

A Guide to MATLAB Object-Oriented Programming

A Guide to MATLAB Object-Oriented Programming is the first book to deliver broad coverage of the documented and undocumented object-oriented features of MATLAB®. Unlike the typical approach of other resources, this guide explains why each feature is important, demonstrates how each feature is used, and promotes an understanding of the interactions between features.
Assuming an intermediate level of MATLAB programming knowledge, the book not only concentrates on MATLAB coding techniques but also discusses topics critical to general software development. It introduces fundamentals first before integrating these concepts into example applications. In the first section, the book discusses eight basic functions: constructor, subsref, subsasgn, display, struct, fieldnames, get, and set. Building on the previous section, it explores inheritance topics and presents the Class Wizard, a powerful MATLAB class generation tool. The final section delves into advanced strategies, including containers, static variables, and function fronts.
With more than 20 years of experience designing and implementing object-oriented software, the expert author has developed an accessible and comprehensive book that aids readers in creating effective object-oriented software using MATLAB.

    From the Publisher
Computational Mathematics: Models, Methods, and Analysis with MATLAB and MPI explores and illustrates this process. Each section of the first six chapters is motivated by a specific application. The author applies a model, selects a numerical method, implements computer simulations, and assesses the ensuing results. These chapters include an abundance of MATLAB code. By studying the code instead of using it as a "black box, " you take the first step toward more sophisticated numerical modeling. The last four chapters focus on multiprocessing algorithms implemented using message passing interface (MPI). These chapters include Fortran 9x codes that illustrate the basic MPI subroutines and revisit the applications of the previous chapters from a parallel implementation perspective. This book is not just about math, not just about computing, and not just about applications, but about all three--in other words, computational science. Whether used as an undergraduate textbook, for self-study, or for reference, it builds the foundation you need to make numerical modeling and simulation integral parts of your investigational toolbox.

Computational Statistics Handbook with MATLAB - Martinez & Martinez

    From the Publisher
As with the best-selling first edition, Computational Statistics Handbook with MATLAB makes computational statistics as accessible as possible by playing down theory and building an understanding of the algorithms used in a wide range of applications. The second edition recognizes the new functionality of the MATLAB statistics toolbox and other updates like the new plotting capabilities of version 7.0. It includes discussion of GUI functionality and expanded coverage of such topics as support vector machines, bagging, boosting, and random forests in pattern recognition. The text also features updated and new problem sets, data sets, exercises, and an appendix containing answers to selected problems.

In this text, Wendy Martinez (Office of Naval Research, Washington D.C.) and Angel Martinez (Naval Surface Warfare Center, Virginia) have the twin goals of explaining computational statistics techniques and promoting the use of the MATLAB software by statisticians and other data analysts. Focusing on implementation rather than theory, they cover probability concepts, sampling concepts, generating random variables, exploratory data analysis, Monte Carlo methods for inferential statistics, data partitioning, probability density estimation, statistical patter recognition, nonparametric regression, Markov chain Monte Carlo methods, and spatial statistics. A brief introduction to the software is provided in an appendix. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

The Finite Element Method - The Basis
Volume 1 is an essential text for people trying to acquaint themselves with the subject and requiring an up to date [COLOR=blue! important][COLOR=blue! important]presentation[/color][/color] of theory and possibilities. It deals strictly with linear problems and the matter presented allows engineers and scientists with different [COLOR=blue! important][COLOR=blue! important]backgrounds[/color][/color] to become acquainted with the subject. The mathematics is kept at a fairly simple level to cover a wide readership. The book should also be useful to students of mathematics albeit they might be used to a different notation than that used in this text.
The arrangement of Vol.1 differs some what from that of Vol.1 in the fourth edition. A rearrangement of text was made to include the general chapter dealing the concepts of mathematical formulations early in the book Ch.3. This allows the reader to become acquainted rapidly with the mathematical background and where the finite element method fits into the general scheme of numerical approximation.
In addition several chapters dealing with dynamics and transient phenomena have been moved from Vol.2 to this volume. These have been updated and include various approximation procedures recently used e.g. Discontinuous Galerkin.
Though many of the chapters have not been substantially altered, they have been updated to include most recent references and thinking. However many new ideas and subjects are presented in this volume. In particular the following developments should be noted.
1 The recently developed procedures of recovery for increasing the accuracy of the results are presented. These lead naturally to the most efficient procedures of error estimation and adaptivity. The two chapters 14 and 15 present this subject in a thoroughly up to date manner and here all the recent procedures have been made available.
2 The subject of mixed methods Ch.11 has been elaborated further from the fourth edition and much attention has been given to recent developments of hybrid methods including even such methods as Discontinuous Galerkin method Ch.13. Attention has been given to the so-called "enhanced strain" methods that today are widely used in various [COLOR=blue! important][COLOR=blue! important]applications[/color][/color] of solid mechanics.
3 The subject of incompressible behaviour is given special attention and a whole chapter Ch.12 is devoted to it. Here recent work on various procedures of stabilisation is presented in comparative manner and readers can acquaint themselves with the present day developments in this area. Thus chapters 11,12 and 13 have been very substantially rewritten.
4 In the last decade, much progress has been achieved in the development of the so called meshless element free methods methods. Here so called partition of unity procedures have allowed a considerable expansion of FEM possibilities. Chapter 16 presents the present state of the art and here the reader will find many of the concepts that are today at the "[COLOR=blue! important][COLOR=blue! important]sharp[/color][/color] end" of research. These are given in an assessable manner that may guide the developments in the early part of the next millennium.
One important development that is included in the fifth edition is the omission of detailed program listings that have been characteristics of all previous editions. The reason for this is fairly rapid development of the [COLOR=blue! important][COLOR=blue! important]computer [COLOR=blue! important]software[/color][/color][/color] and the need for providing updates that can eliminate errors and show the most recent development. We present for each volume a full program list and [COLOR=blue! important][COLOR=blue! important]computer[/color][/color] procedures on this webpage.

Vol. 2. The Finite Element Method - Solid Mechanics

    Code:
    http://rapidshare.com/files/247372176/Zienkiewicz_TheFiniteElement_Volume_2.rar
Volume 2 is partially rewritten and some new chapters particularly in the area of large deformation and strain are incorporated. In particular we start this volume with the description of non-linear [COLOR=blue! important][COLOR=blue! important]methodologies[/color][/color] of solution for the problem of non-linear material behaviour and introduce right in the beginning the concepts necessary for description of various constitutive laws ranging from viscoelasticity through plasticity to creep.
The chapters dealing with shell and plate formulation which were initially the subject of the finite element attack are brought up to date by recent developments in which so called linked interpolations are used. We mentioned those in the fourth edition but since its publication the development has been rapid and the elements presented here are probably among those which are the best. For this reason we eliminated some of the descriptive matter for the very simple elements previously used in the plate theory and concentrate attention on recent development of both thick and thin approximations for plates, shells etc.
A largely rewritten series of chapters deal with non-linear geometry, stability and buckling of structures as well as large deformation theory necessary for impact studies. Here a simple introduction to large deformation behaviour is given and the reader can thus avoid the complex introduction usually belonging to advanced texts of mechanics. Most of the presentation of this chapter and indeed others of this book uses indicial notation and the generalised notion of strain and stress. Several of the chapters in the new Vol.2 essentially repeat the topics previously dealt with in Vol.2 of the fourth edition that remain still valid today. These include such things as finite strip methods etc.

Vol. 3. The Finite Element Method - Fluid Dynamics

    Code:
    http://rapidshare.com/files/247373533/Zienkiewicz_TheFiniteElement_Volume_3.rar
This volume as the title indicates is directed entirely at those whose main interest is in the [COLOR=blue! important][COLOR=blue! important]fluid [COLOR=blue! important]mechanics[/color][/color][/color] area. Here however a very wide application field is covered ranging from incompressible slow viscous flow to [COLOR=blue! important][COLOR=blue! important]high-speed[/color][/color] supersonic flows. Such specialised applications as shallow water flow, ocean waves and metal or plastic forming are also included in this text as specific examples.
What is entirely novel in this text is the manner of presentation and the introduction of a unified algorithm, which is applicable to all the fields of study in the fluid mechanics area. This algorithm which has been developed only a few years ago has now superseded in view of the authors many older ones and provides a unique and simple approach to most problems. The new algorithm is based on the so-called Characteristic Galerkin method of dealing with convection dominated problems. Thus with suitable splitting the full fluid mechanics equations can be divided into two parts. The first of these dealing with a set of scalar [COLOR=blue! important][COLOR=blue! important]transport[/color][/color] is convection dominated and uses the Characteristic Galerkin process. The second presents a self-adjoint problem in terms of pressure for which Galerkin procedures can be directly applied. Although some of the concepts have been given in the fourth edition, most of the presentation is new and here very little remains from the previous edition. We believe Vol.3 is the one from which many can learn the basic concepts of computational fluid dynamics.
We introduce here methodologies capable of dealing with supersonic and hypersonic behaviours at the same time showing that the same formulation applies well to the study of shallow water tidal phenomena being able to predict such things as the `bore' that occurs in many highly tidal areas.
The new algorithm stabilises both the convective part of the equations and the incompressible phenomena.
Many new topics are included and in particular application to the study of wave resistance of ships and other free surface phenomena can now be modelled using the new algorithm fairly simply. Also in the same chapter, we deal with buoyancy phenomena by which various convection problems can be solved. These are of importance in [COLOR=blue! important][COLOR=blue! important]heat [COLOR=blue! important]transfer[/color][/color][/color] engineering as well as in environmental studies.

Robert Ludlum May 25, 1927 New York City – March 12, 2001 Naples, Florida was an American author of 25 thriller novels. There are more than 290 million copies of his books in print, and they have been translated into 32 languages. Ludlum also published books under the pseudonyms Jonathan Ryder and Michael Shepherd.[1]
Some of Ludlum's novels have been made into films and mini-series, including The Osterman Weekend, The Holcroft Covenant, The Apocalypse Watch, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. A non-Ludlum book supposedly inspired by his unused notes, Covert One: The Hades Factor, has also been made into a mini-series. The Bourne movies, starring Matt Damon in the title role, have been commercially and critically successful The Bourne Ultimatum won three Academy Awards in 2008, although the story lines depart significantly from the source material.
Ludlum died in 2001 of a subdural hematoma.

The use of a dielectric resonator as a resonant antenna was proposed in 1983. Due to the absence of metallic loss, the dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) is highly efficient when operated at millimetre wave frequencies. With the use of high dielectric constant material, the DRA can also be used as a small and low profile antenna when operated at low microwave frequencies. Low cost dielectric materials are now easily available commercially: encouraging more antenna engineers to design communication systems with DRAs.
Although DRAs are show promise in practical applications, surprisingly, there is no research summary in reference form on DRAs available. This book will update current literature and present new information on DRAs.

Physics for Scientists and Engineers 6th ed. (College Text) - Serway and Jewett

    Mechanics
    P A R T 1
Liftoff of the space shuttle Columbia.
The tragic accident of February 1, 2003 that took
the lives of all seven astronauts aboard happened just before Volume 1 of this book went to
    press.
The launch and operation of a space shuttle involves many fundamental principles of
    classical mechanics, thermodynamics, and electromagnetism.
We study the principles of classical mechanics in Part 1 of this text, and apply these principles to rocket propulsion in Chapter 9.(NASA) 1 hysics, the most fundamental physical science, is concerned with the basic principles of the Universe.
It is the foundation upon which the other sciences—astronomy, biology, chemistry, and geology—are based. The beauty of physics lies in the simplicity of the fundamental physical theories and in the manner in which just a small number of fundamental concepts, equations, and assumptions can alter and expand our view of the world around us.
The study of physics can be divided into six main areas:
    1.
classical mechanics, which is concerned with the motion of objects that are large
    relative to atoms and move at speeds much slower than the speed of light;
    2.
relativity, which is a theory describing objects moving at any speed, even speeds
    approaching the speed of light;
    3.
    thermodynamics, which deals with heat, work, temperature, and the statistical behavior of systems with large numbers of particles;
    4.
    electromagnetism, which is concerned with electricity, magnetism, and electromagnetic fields;
    5.
    optics, which is the study of the behavior of light and its interaction with materials;
    6.
quantum mechanics, a collection of theories connecting the behavior of matter at
the submicroscopic level to macroscopic observations.
The disciplines of mechanics and electromagnetism are basic to all other
branches of classical physics (developed before 1900) and modern physics
    (c. 1900–present). The first part of this textbook deals with classical mechanics,
sometimes referred to as Newtonian mechanics or simply mechanics.
This is an appropriate place to begin an introductory text because many of the basic principles used to understand mechanical systems can later be used to describe such natural phenomena as waves and the transfer of energy by heat.
Furthermore, the laws of conservation of energy and momentum introduced in mechanics retain their importance in the fundamental theories of other areas of physics.
Today, classical mechanics is of vital importance to students from all disciplines.
It is highly successful in describing the motions of different objects, such as planets,
rockets, and baseballs. In the first part of the text, we shall describe the laws of classical mechanics and examine a wide range of phenomena that can be understood
    with these fundamental ideas.

Ordinary and Partial Differential Equation Routines in Matlab - H.J. Lee & W.E. Schiesser

This book provides a set of ODE/PDE integration routines in the six most widely used computer languages, enabling scientists and engineers to apply ODE/PDE analysis toward solving complex problems. It concisely reviews integration algorithms, then analyzes the widely used Runge-Kutta method. It first presents a complete code before discussing its components in detail, focusing on integration concepts such as error monitoring and control. The format allows readers to understand the basics of ODE/PDE integration, then calculate sample numerical solutions within a targeted programming language. The applications discussed can be used as templates for the development of a spectrum of new applications.

Optics: Learning by Computing, with Examples Using Maple, MathCad®, Matlab®, Mathematica®, and Maple® (Undergraduate Texts in Contemporary Physics)

This new edition is intended for a one semester course in optics for juniors and seniors in science and engineering. It uses scripts from Maple, MathCad, Mathematica, and MATLAB to provide a simulated laboratory where students can learn by exploration and discovery instead of passive absorption.
The text covers all the standard topics of a traditional optics course, including: geometrical optics and aberration, interference and diffraction, coherence, Maxwell's equations, wave guides and propagating modes, blackbody radiation, atomic emission and lasers, optical properties of materials, Fourier transforms and FT spectroscopy, image formation, and holography. It contains step by step derivations of all basic formulas in geometrical, wave and Fourier optics.
The basic text is supplemented by over 170 files in Maple, MathCad, Mathematica, and MATLAB (many of which are in the text; al scripts are included on the CD), each suggesting programs to solve a particular problem, and each linked to a topic in or application of optics. The computer files are dynamic, allowing the reader to see instantly the effects of changing parameters in the equations. Students are thus encouraged to ask "What if?" questions to asses the physical implications of the formulas. The discussion of Fourier transforms in particular is enhanced by the availability of numerical methods.
The book is written for the study of particular projects but can easily be adapted to other situations. The threefold arrangement of text, applications, and files makes the book suitable for "self-learning" by scientists or engineers who would like to refresh their knowledge of optics. In the classroom, the Maple, MathCad, Mathematica, and MATLAB scripts can serve as starting points for homework; outside, they can help find solutions to complex problems in engineering applications.

…The book is well organized and conveniently divided into four sections. … A feature of the text which I found particularly appealing was the almost conversational style in which it is written, … making it riveting reading. Another aspect which was striking was the manner in which the authors very successfully integrated historical and factual information. … the book provides first-year students with a solid basis on which to continue studies in astronomy or physics.

Minding the Heavens - The Story of Our Discovery of the Milky Way - L. belkora

    Product Description
Today we are used to the idea that we live on a planet circling the sun, that our sun is just one of billions of stars in the galaxy we call the Milky Way, and that our galaxy is but one of billions born out of the big bang. Yet as recently as the early twentieth century the general public and even astronomers had vague and confused notions about what lay beyond the visible stars.
This book is about how we discovered that we lived in a galaxy, in fact a universe full of galaxies. This fascinating story of the discovery of our own and other galaxies is told through the lives of seven astronomers: Thomas Wright, William Herschel, Wilhelm Struve, William Huggins, Jacobus Kapteyn, Harlow Shapley and Edwin Hubble. Each contributed greatly to our present understanding of where we live in the cosmos.
Through the science and lives of these seven people, each shaped by their family, friends and contemporaries; we follow this amazing story of discovery.
From the mid 1700s with Thomas Wright through to the mid 20th century with the more familiar names of Shapley and Hubble, each character bringing us nearer to our present understanding of the Universe

Radar Systems Analysis and Design Using MatLab - Mahafza Bassem R

MATLAB Simulations for Radar Systems Design

Description: This textbook is an introduction to Scientific Computing, in which several numerical methods for the computer solution of certain classes of mathematical problems are illustrated. The authors show how to compute the zeros or the integrals of continuous functions, solve linear systems, approximate functions by polynomials and construct accurate approximations for the solution of ordinary and partial differential equations. To make the presentation concrete and appealing, the programming environments Matlab and Octave, which is freely distributed, are adopted as faithful companions. The book contains the solutions to several problems posed in exercises and examples, often originating from specific applications. A specific section is devoted to subjects which were not addressed in the book and contains the bibliographical references for a more comprehensive treatment of the material. The second edition features many new problems and examples, as well as more numerical methods for linear and nonlinear systems and ordinary and partial differential equations

Vibration Simulation Using MATLAB and ANSYS - Michael R Hatch

    Product Description
Incorporating the use of industry-standard software to help with problem solving, Vibration Simulation Using MATLAB and ANSYS explores the subject of vibration from a fairly sophisticated, mathematical point of view. With a three degree-of-freedom system as a unifying theme, the author develops the associated equations of motion, then in each chapter includes both a closed-form solution and the MATLAB code for solving a problem. The book's unique approach makes it especially useful for engineers who lack experience with state space, and by enhancing their ability to communicate, it will prove useful to the mechanical and control engineering communities as well.
    From the Back Cover
Transfer function form, zpk, state space, modal, and state space modal forms. For someone learning dynamics for the first time or for engineers who use the tools infrequently, the options available for constructing and representing dynamic mechanical models can be daunting. It is important to find a way to put them all in perspective and have them available for quick reference.
It is also important to have a strong understanding of modal analysis, from which the total response of a system can be constructed. Finally, it helps to know how to take the results of large dynamic finite element models and build small MATLAB® state space models.
Vibration Simulation Using MATLAB and ANSYS answers all those needs. Using a three degree-of-freedom (DOF) system as a unifying theme, it presents all the methods in one book. Each chapter provides the background theory to support its example, and each chapter contains both a closed form solution to the problem-shown in its entirety-and detailed MATLAB code for solving the problem.
Bridging the gap between introductory vibration courses and the techniques used in actual practice, Vibration Simulation Using MATLAB and ANSYS builds the foundation that allows you to simulate your own real-life problems.
    Features

Demonstrates how to solve real problems, covering the vibration of systems from single DOF to finite element models with thousands of DOF
Illustrates the differences and similarities between different models by tracking a single example throughout the book
Includes the complete, closed-form solution and the MATLAB code used to solve each problem
Shows explicitly how to take the results of a realistic ANSYS finite element model and develop a small MATLAB state-space model
Provides a solid grounding in how individual modes of vibration combine for overall system response

An Introduction To Black Holes Information And The String Theory - Susskind, Lindesay

    Synopsis
Over the last decade the physics of black holes has been revolutionized by developments that grew out of Jacob Bekenstein's realization that black holes have entropy. This revolution has culminated in a remarkable principle called "the holographic principle," which is now a major focus of attention in gravitational research, quantum field theory and elementary particle physics. Leonard Susskind, one of the co-inventors of the holographic principle as well as one of the founders of string theory, develops and explains these concepts.

    Black Holes - Don Nardo

    Annotation
Discusses the history and current state of scientific understanding of black holes, exploring what they are, how they are formed, potential uses, and what they tell us about the fate of the universe.
    Francine Thomas - Children's Literature
Consider an object with such gravitational pull that even light cannot escape it and where most natural laws do not hold true—a "hole that curves space and warps time." Though there are potentially large numbers of black holes, these mysterious objects are not easy to observe since their darkness hides them from view. Interestingly, it may never be possible to discover what is hidden inside as long as we remain in our present physical form. Yet they continue to intrigue us and fire our imaginations. Evidence hints these wonders may be "intimately connected to many of the most fundamental processes of the universe" such as gravity, stellar evolution, formation of galaxies, and effects of time on space. In other words, understanding black holes might tell us where and how our universe began. Author Don Nardo explains that a black hole is not simply an "empty hole, or void, in space, but instead a cosmic entity having very substantial mass." He journeys through discovery beginning with Isaac Newton's 1666 theory of universal gravitation and Albert Einstein's vision of space and time in the early 1900's. Nardo reveals a complicated subject in a detailed, but straightforward manner. He poses questions to spark exciting challenges for the mind. Can black holes be used as cosmic gateways? Do they have implications for the fate of the universe? While the black and white illustrations add much, color would further enhance the drama of this nonfiction work. Bibliographic information is included for additional study. 2004, Lucent Books, Ages 8 to 12.
